Toronto City Builder Camp
Thanks to Marabelle and Rick for presenting at this event on Sept 17. There was so much interest that CCE had to find a larger venue – the AGO. Here is the presentation that they gave Toronto City Builders’ Camp – Mount Dennis
City Builder Camp
On September 17th, 120 people met to hear about existing challenges in St James Town, Mount Dennis, and Yonge & Bloor. These communities presented about their neighbourhoods and heard advice and feedback from urban planners, community organizers, architects, and developers who had volunteered their time for the day. This event was designed to facilitate richer connections between residents looking to improve their neighbourhoods and people across the city with relevant skills and experiences.
We also heard presentations about lessons learned from the challenges and successes of past partnerships. After lunch, we all gathered around tables to make maps and discuss potential solutions for these communities.
You can watch videos and see photos of this event on our website, and read a recap of the event in this blog post. CCE will continue to follow up with these communities and those who have committed to helping them improve their neighbourhoods. We are hoping to host another City Builder Camp in Spring 2012. If your community would like to receive help at that camp, or if you have expertise you would like to contribute, please contact Heather Ann Kaldeway at heatherann@cityecology.net.
We would like to thank those who made this day possible: the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto Community Housing, TAS Design Build, People Plan Toronto, and our volunteers, especially Aslam Shaikh for coordinating the day and Nathan Storring for his video work.

Do you believe that community-based planning is vital for the design of a neighbourhood? Are you a city builder who understands that great neighbourhoods are the result of people who care about the places they live, pairing community aspirations with effective planning and design practices?
If so, then we want you to join us as we explore how communities are taking charge of city building in their neighbourhoods. We will discuss the role that both communities as well as urban planning and design professionals are taking to create collaborative relationships that strengthen the physical aspects of the city.
This is a free event but attendees must pre-register.

Event program:
To bring community organizations together with planning and design professionals to discuss specific initiatives to enable their communities to take the lead in city building in their neighbourhoods. The program includes:
- Lessons learned: Successes and challenges from community/professional partnerships already underway: What’s worked? What are the ingredients for a productive collaboration between communities and planners and designers?
- Community pitches: Pre-selected community initiatives ‘in the works’ will be pitched to a panel of professionals with extensive planning and design experience who will provide feedback and review community submissions for potential pairing with design professionals.
- Networking opportunities: The lunch hour will feature a networking opportunity for community group participants and design professionals to openly connect, ask questions, and share their city building successes, challenges, and experiences with each other.
- Next steps for city building in your community: Community participants will leave equipped with a list of ‘to dos’ that advance their ideas/projects/plans for their community, and will commit to a ‘report-back’ in four months on the status of their initiative. Design professionals will leave with a broad exposure to community opportunities seeking collaborators, and potential partners.
